Manchester United can make a third trophy-winning visit to Wembley within nine months by getting the better of Southampton in 90 minutes to lift the EFL Cup.
The Red Devils beat Crystal Palace to win last season’s FA Cup, Leicester to claim the Community Shield and can now give manager Jose Mourinho a fourth victory in this competition following his three with Chelsea.
From November 6 onwards, United have lost only one of their 25 matches, which was the second leg of their EFL Cup tie away to Hull when their 2-0 win in the first game overrode that 2-1 defeat, while they have also mostly eliminated the costly draws from earlier in the campaign that have stopped them from launching a Premier League title challenge.
The form being shown now by Mourinho’s side is clearly very strong and they have the squad strength to cover the losses to injury of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick in Wednesday’s Europa League success away to St Etienne.
Southampton, you could argue, would be the more deserving winners because they have not conceded an EFL Cup goal this term and beaten four Premier League rivals in Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and Liverpool in both legs of the semi-final.
But the Saints have been wildly inconsistent in the other competitions they have contested and either version of them could turn up at Wembley, while the 15-day break since their last game, a 4-0 win at Sunderland, may be a hindrance rather than a help as the momentum will have been lost whereas United are on a winning roll.
United’s price to win in 90 minutes has been cut to odds-on as their bandwagon picks up pace and so for a touch of extra value, we will back the favourites to also keep a clean sheet.
