Barcelona surged to the top of the Primera Liga table with a sensational 5-0 rout of fierce rivals Real Madrid.
The Catalan giants gave a sign of what was to come when Lionel Messi’s sublime chip from a tight angle struck the upright, but the opener soon came when Xavi produced a calm finish to beat Iker Casillas.
Barca then doubled their advantage when David Villa beat fellow Spain international Sergio Ramos and crossed for Pedro to slot the ball home.
Villa was denied by a smart save from Casillas after the break, but the hosts then delighted the Camp Nou crowd with two goals in three minutes to effectively end the match as a contest.
First, Villa raced onto a pinpoint Messi pass to slot home Barca’s third, and the summer signing from Valencia then made it four by nutmegging Casillas.
Sergio Busquets almost added to the embarrassment with a shot from the halfway that just dipped too late, but a fifth did come when Jeffren converted a Bojan cross.
And Madrid’s miserable night was completed in added time when Ramos saw red.
