One of Napoli's most consistent performers, Faouzi Ghoulam, continues to attract interest from the Premier League as, according to the latest Chelsea transfer news, the defender remains a big-money Antonio Conte target.
After a sluggish start to life in England, Blues boss Conte has begun to excel in charge of affairs at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea are currently top of the table with a one point lead over second place Liverpool.
The Italian may be eyeing the January transfer window as an opportunity to fortify his squad ahead of the business end of the season, in order to strengthen Chelsea and nullify any attempt from Liverpool, Manchester City or Arsenal to leap-frog them in the closing months of the season.
Considering Conte's knowledge of Italian football, it is logical he would return to the Serie A in order to make player acquisitions and a move for Napoli star Ghoulam, 25, makes sense as Conte's preferred defensive system of late is a three-man rearguard, with Cesar Azpilicueta playing on the right hand side.
Branislav Ivanovic is considered the weak-link and with Azpilicueta on the right, that leaves a gap to be filled on the left flank. Enter Algeria international Ghoulam.
In 16 combined Serie A and Champions League starts, Ghoulam has provided five assists and is clearly an expert passer when it comes to build-up play at the back. He is also physical, strong in the air and can hold on to the ball.
British tabloid reports indicate that a £24m move for Ghoulam was unsuccessful in the summer window but the latest transfer news suggests Conte will make a return bid in the coming month.
Ghoulam and Napoli are next in action against Inter Milan on Friday evening.
