Wigan Athletic reel in Kilmarnock ace Conor Sammon

Football News Staff - 1 Feb 2011
Wigan Athletic have signed Kilmarnock striker Conor Sammon for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old, who has netted 15 times in just 20 starts for Killie this season, rejected a move to Championship strugglers Scunthorpe United earlier this month.

And his patience has paid off with the Irishman putting pen-to-paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Latics just hours before the January transfer window came to an end.

Sammon told Wigan’s official website: “It was a big decision to leave a club that has been so good for my career but I'm a Wigan Athletic player now and I want to prove to everyone here they've made the right choice, and prove myself in the Premier League.”

Manager Roberto Martinez added: “Conor is a young, hungry player we have been looking at for a while.

“He has developed in an incredible manner over the last six months and it's fortunate that we've been able to move for him before he has achieved his full potential, which we're hoping he will do in a Latics shirt.

“We are delighted to welcome him on board.”
