Defender Steven Caldwell agrees one-year Wigan contract

Football News Staff - 24 Aug 2010

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has strengthened his defence with the signing of former Burnley defender Steven Caldwell.

Caldwell, who has been training with the Latics, has signed a one-year contract to be reunited with brother Gary at the DW Stadium.

The Latics have conceded 10 goals in their opening two Premier League games and Martinez believes the 29-year-old’s experience will be vital to turning their defensive woes around.

He told the club’s official website: “We have seen what Steven is all about during his time here – a leader on and off the field and he is a great personality to have in the dressing room.

“He has shown real professionalism in his time with us and we are delighted to have him on board.

“He has good experience of the Premier League and has played in the Champions League UEFA Cup, plus he is a full Scotland international.

“He is a totally committed defender who will add fantastic competition to the squad.”
