Dave Whelan will sell Wigan Athletic

Football News Staff - 2 Nov 2010
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has revealed he is planning to sell the Premier League club.

With his own funds, the 73-year-old, who turns 74 later this month, has guided the Latics from the bottom rung of the Football League to the top tier of English football.

Whelan maintains he wants his beloved club to be financially secure for years to come and having seen what happened to Blackburn after they lost wealthy benefactor Jack Walker, he does not want Wigan Athletic to be a burden to his grandchildren in the future.

He told the Daily Mirror: “It would be unfair of me to pass the club to my grandchildren.

“I have been paying in more than £100m and I can’t put them in a position where they have to put money in.

“That is exactly what has happened at Blackburn.”
