Dave Whelan: I would have followed Roberto Martinez out of Wigan

Football News Staff - 2 Sep 2010

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed he would have quit the club if they fans tried to force out boss Roberto Martinez.

The Latics endured a wretched start to the season, conceding 10 goals in just two games as they were thrashed 4-0 by Blackpool and 6-0 by Chelsea at the DW Stadium.

But the Latics turned it around at the weekend by securing a surprise 1-0 victory at Tottenham.

And Whelan said: “I rate Roberto highly and said to the fans, if you want his head, you’ll get mine as well.

“Had they insisted, and even if we would have lost at Tottenham and they start crying for his head and had he asked to go, I would definitely have resigned with him.”
