West Ham co-owner David Gold claims Robert Green’s gesture following the win over Tottenham was warranted.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper gave an “up yours” gesture moments after the 1-0 victory at Upton Park, in which he answered his critics with a fine performance.
Green has been jeered by opposition supporters following his infamous howler during England’s draw with the United States at the World Cup, and has struggled for form so far this season.
But Green turned it around with a string of fine saves as the Hammers recorded their first victory of the campaign last season, and Gold thinks his reaction should not be blown out of proportion.
Gold said: “I have to say I don’t think there was any malice in it whatsoever. I think he was just saying, ‘didn’t I have a good game? Look, this is the real Robert Green. I’m back’.
“I think that was what happened and we ought to allow him to have that moment because that’s all that it was.
“If the FA have written to him to explain that then fair enough, that’s fine. Let’s move on. He didn’t kill anyone.”
