West Ham defender Matthew Upson could be sold, co-owner David Gold has admitted.
England international Upson is in the final year of his deal with the Upton Park club, and both Gold and fellow co-owner David Sullivan are wary that they could lose him for nothing next summer.
Gold told the Daily Star: “We want to keep Matt here, but at the same time we know we may have to sell him if he tells us he doesn’t want to stay.
“We don’t want to let him leave the club for nothing. It’s a difficult balancing act and a dilemma for us. If someone came in and bid £6m or £7m for him, we would have to sell.”
However, Gold insists he has not given up hope of agreeing fresh terms with the centre-back.
He added: “We will do everything in our power to keep hold of Matt Upson – as we will do with all our best players. We want to see Upson end his career with West Ham.”
