David Beckham deal is off, says Tottenham boss

Football News Staff - 9 Jan 2011
David Beckham will not be joining Tottenham on loan, boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed.

Redknapp had been hoping to land the former England captain, 35, on a temporary move from Los Angeles Galaxy now that the Major League Soccer season is over.

But the Spurs now claims that “insurance issues”, relating to the Achilles injury Beckham sustained while on a loan at AC Milan last season, have scuppered his plans.

Redknapp told Sky Sports News: “I don't think it's going to happen,

“I spoke with the chairman and I think there are big problems with insurance issues and everything.

“He got injured last year at Milan, I think there was issues there with insurance.”

However, Redknapp did reveal Beckham will still link up with the White Hart Lane outfit, but only to train with the Premier League side for a month.

He continued: “What's going to happen, David is welcome to come and train here for a month or so, which I think he would like to do and we're pleased to have him come and train.

“It will be nice to have him here training with us for a month and I think he'll be great to have around the place and he'll be a good influence on everybody and I look forward to him coming.

“But I think as far as playing goes it looks like it's a no-goer.”

And Beckham said on Tottenham’s official website: “It's important that I maintain a high level of fitness during the MLS off season.

“I'm thankful to Tottenham and Harry Redknapp for giving me the opportunity to train with the team over the next month.

“I'm grateful to the LA Galaxy for allowing to me to train with Spurs. I look forward to getting to work as soon as possible.”
