Asamoah Gyan wants Danny Welbeck to make Ghana switch

Football News Staff - 14 Mar 2011
Asamoah Gyan would love to see Sunderland team-mate Danny Welbeck make himself available for the Ghana national team.

Manchester-born forward Welbeck has represented England from U17 to U21 level, but would qualify for the Black Stars through his Ghanaian parents.

And Gyan has revealed he has spoken to the 20-year-old, who is on loan to the Black Cats from Manchester United, about making the switch to play for Ghana.

The 25-year-old, who made a name for himself at last summer’s World Cup in South Africa, told KickOffNigeria: “I have spoken to him (Welbeck), and I think he might play for Ghana.

“But I am not really sure of that for now. He's young and he has not made up his mind yet.

“He says we should give him enough time to think about it, but we all hope he comes as he is such a fantastic young player.”
