Vincenzo Montella takes charge at Roma

Vincenzo Montella has been named the new Roma boss following Claudio Ranieri’s resignation.

Ranieri insisted at the weekend that he would not walk away from the Giallarossi despite a supporters’ protest at the club’s training ground turning nasty with fireworks and flares thrown into the facility.

But having seen his side surrender a three-goal advantage to crash to a 4-3 defeat to Genoa on Sunday, Ranieri offered his resignation and it was accepted by the club’s board.

Former striker Montella, who has been the club’s youth team coach, now takes control of first-team affair until the end of the season, when a decision will be made on Ranieri’s successor.

Rumours are already circulating that Roma are interested in hiring Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti, who is a former player of the Stadio Olimpico outfit.

Ex-AC Milan coach Ancelotti is enduring a tough time at Stamford Bridge at the moment with Chelsea facing the prospect of ending this season trophy-less.

The Blues are currently 12 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United and the crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend, losing on penalties at home to Everton.
