Rock-bottom Bari are hoping their victory over Lecce will be the start of push towards Serie A safety.
The Biancorossi’s 1-0 victory on Thursday means they are now just one point behind Lecce and Brescia, and four behind 17th-placed Cesena heading into Sunday’s visit of Bologna.
The victory was only their third of their league campaign, and coach Giampiero Ventura admitted a defeat would have been disastrous for his side.
He said: “We started the year with a victory and this is a good sign. A defeat would have been a hammer blow for my players.
“We arrived to the game having to do without several injured players but the players interpreted the game well and we deserved the win.”
Ventura is now hoping new loan signing Stefano Okaka, who netted the winner on his debut, can get the goals that helps his side escape relegation to Serie B.
While relegation-threatened Bari were beating their fellow strugglers, Bologna settled for a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina.
