Birmingham came roaring back from two goals down to snatch a point against 10-man Sunderland on the opening day.
Steed Malbranque squandered an early opening before Darren Bent slotted the Black Cats ahead from the spot after Stephen Carr brought down Frazier Campbell (24).
Blues goalkeeper Ben Foster clawed the ball away to prevent Lee Bowyer recording an embarrassing own goal, and just before half-time the Black Cats were reduced to 10 men when Lee Cattermole received a second yellow card for a foul on the Birmingham midfielder.
Full-back Carr’s day went from bad to worse when he headed past his own keeper to double Sunderland’s advantage (56) - but Blues came storming back to rescue a point.
Simon Mignolet could not keep out Scott Dann’s header (77) and the comeback was completed when Liam Ridgewell stabbed in after Sebastian Larsson’s free-kick caused chaos in the box (88).
