The week began with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson announcing Wayne Rooney wanted to leave the club, and the striker then confirmed the news via a statement.
However, Rooney made a surprise U-turn on Friday by penning a new five-year contract, but he does miss the trip to the Britannia Stadium due to an ankle injury.
United are also without Jonny Evans (hip), Michael Owen (groin) and Ryan Giggs (hamstring).
Stoke could have striker Ricardo Fuller on the bench despite a should injury suffered in last weekend, but midfielder Dean Whitehead does miss out through suspension.
