Defender James Perch’s late own goal gifted Stoke a 2-1 victory at Newcastle.
The Magpies opened the scoring with four minutes remaining in a dire first half when Kevin Nolan made no mistake from the penalty spot after Robert Huth fouled Toon’s top goalscorer Andy Carroll.
Stoke improved greatly after the break and Kenwyne Jones headed against the upright, with Ricardo Fuller putting the rebound wide.
Former Sunderland striker Jones, booed by the home fans throughout, was again denied by the frame of goal before finally heading home the equaliser in the 67th minute.
And the Potters were then handed the winner five minutes from time when Perch, a summer signing from Nottingham Forest, headed a corner past his own goalkeeper, Tim Krul.
