Hatem Ben Arfa’s first goal for Newcastle handed the visiting Magpies a 1-0 victory at Everton.
The Magpies suffered a setback during the first half when goalkeeper Steve Harper had to go off following a clash with Jermaine Beckford.
But the visitors responded in style when on-loan winger Ben Arfa gave Toffees goalkeeper Tim Howard no chance by cutting in from the left and unleashing a rising shot that flew into the Everton net.
Phil Jagielka headed just wide and Leon Osman failed to test substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul as the Toffees hunted for an equaliser.
Newcastle had a penalty appeal turned away when Kevin Nolan went down under a challenge from Seamus Coleman, and the Magpies then survived a late scare as Yakubu hit the post and Maourane Fellaini wasted a glorious chance.
