Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies both struck twice as Bolton thumped 10-man Newcastle 5-1 at the Reebok Stadium.
Wanderers went ahead on 18 minutes when Kevin Davies sent Tim Krul the wrong way from the penalty spot after former Trotter Kevin Nolan had handled in his own area.
Gary Cahill nodded wide a decent chance to double the hosts’ advantage, and Lee Chung-Yong was also off-target with a headed chance.
But the South Korean did make it 2-0 six minutes before the interval when Matt Taylor’s free-kick struck the crossbar, and Danny Simpson’s attempted clearance was deflected into the path of Lee to fire home.
Elmander extended Bolton’s advantage five minutes after the restart when he coolly slotted the ball home, but Newcastle gave themselves a glimmer of hope two minutes later when Andy Carroll struck.
The in-form forward then made it four with 18 minutes remaining by out-muscling Fabricio Coloccini before finishing calmly, and it was an elbow on Elmander that led to Coloccini seeing red moments later.
Newcastle tried to go down fighting as Peter Lovenkrands forced a decent save from Jussi Jaaskelainen before an unmarked Mike Williamson volleyed over.
However, the Magpies’ miserable day was capped off in added time when Davies netted his second spot-kick of the game after he was fouled by Jose Enrique.
