The incident sparked some life into Blues and Johnson headed wide before Ali Al Habsi reacted quickly to smother the ball after spilling a Sebastian Larsson free-kick.
Al Habsi then came to his side’s rescue by saving from Jerome in a one-on-one situation, and opposite number Foster matched the Oman goalkeeper’s heroics with a fine stop to deny Rodallega.
Blues midfielder Craig Gardner was dismissed late on for a poor challenge on Franco Di Santo, but Wigan could not capitalise on their numerical advantage.
