Newcastle will support Andy Carroll

Football News Staff - 21 Oct 2010

Newcastle will stand by forward Andy Carroll despite his recent arrest, manager Chris Hughton has insisted.

The 21-year-old, who recently penned a long-term deal with the Magpies, was arrested at the weekend and charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

And Hughton said: “With everything you have to learn by your mistakes. All individuals are different but these are issues we have to deal with.

“The most important thing is to give him the support and guidance he needs and that he continues to keep doing what he does right on the training pitch and in matches.

“He is easy to manage. We are all aware there have been other issues with him – Carroll is not the only individual that you can say that about.

“From my point of view and the club’s point of view, these are things we have to deal with and we have to deal with them in the appropriate manner.”

Hughton went on to confirm that Carroll is likely to be in his plans for Saturday’s trip to West Ham, adding: “I have decisions to make regarding the squad but all those decisions will be made solely on footballing reasons.

“With Andy, he has concentrated very much on his football. He is a strong-minded individual and I am quite sure he will be in the right frame of mind to play football, quite sure.”
