Newcastle boss thrilled with Chelsea cup upset

Football News Staff - 23 Sep 2010

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton hailed his side after they inflicted a first defeat on Chelsea this season.

Shola Ameobi’s last-gasp strike saw the Magpies snatch a 4-3 victory in a thrilling Carling Cup tie, and Hughton was delighted with his side’s display against the Premier League leaders.

He said: “This was a game most people felt we couldn’t win irrespective of what side they put out.

“We showed great character and great finishing to get back in the game. It speaks volumes of the players in the changing room.

“Hopefully it will give us the momentum to go into the next few games.”

And Hughton singled out match-winner Ameobi for praise following his two-goal display.

He added: “Shola showed why he is still at this football club.

“He has had periods at the club where injuries have hindered his progress. That was the case last season.

“But on this form he is a top player.”
