Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has vowed to help keep striker Andy Carroll on the right path.
Carroll, 21, was arrested last week and charged with assaulting his former girlfriend, the third time he has been arrested in the last three years.
And reformed bad-boy Barton, who created Carroll’s winner against West Ham at the weekend, has revealed he will be offering his advice to the Magpies striker, having had his own off-field issues in the past.
The former Manchester City player said: “My reputation hindered me for a long, long time and I will try to guide him to stop him going down that path.
“I’ve been in his shoes. Andy knows where we are if he needs us. It’s a massive dressing room. I will try and converse with him.
“The courts will take the necessary steps and it’s futile for me to talk about it to an extent. But he’s a great kid.
“He has the world in front of him. He isn’t the finished article by any means, but he is a precocious talent. If that is channelled right then he has the world at his feet.”
