The Football Association could hit Newcastle defender Mike Williamson with a retrospective punishment following his challenge on Johan Elmander at the weekend.
Williamson stood his ground appeared to use his head when Bolton forward Elmander ran towards goal during the Magpies 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Bolton on Saturday.
Referee Howard Webb reportedly did not see the incident took place and, if that is indeed the case, the FA will be able to use video evidence to determine whether or Williamson should be punished.
An FA spokesman said: “We will be looking at the footage and establishing firstly, if the referee saw it and secondly, if he didn’t whether he would have shown a red card if he had.”
Williamson’s team-mate Fabricio Coloccini was dismissed for an apparent elbow on Elmander during the game, and if Williamson is handed a retrospective ban manager Chris Hughton will be without two of his first-choice defenders for this weekend’s clash with Premier League champions Chelsea.
