Sir Alex Ferguson trying to avoid ref paranoia

Football News Staff - 31 Mar 2011
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims he is trying not to get paranoid about refereeing decisions.

Ferguson is currently serving a five-match touchline ban for comments about official Martin Atkinson following the defeat to title rivals Chelsea last month, which also landed him a £30,000 fine.

The two Premier League giants will go head-to-head in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in April and they also meet in what could be a title decider in May, and Ferguson has claimed his side have been on the wrong end of some bad decisions in recent meetings with the Blues.

He said: “I think the last few games we've had terrible decisions against us and you've just got to be careful you don't have paranoia about it.

“But ability-wise we're a good team, we played exceptionally well at Chelsea in the last game. We were very, very unlucky and we didn't deserve to lose the game.”

And the 69-year-old went on to insist that managers should be free to comment about the performance of an official if it is justified.

Ferguson added: “If you speak your mind it's a problem in the game. They're very strong in supporting the referees.

“In a way I totally agree with that, but there's got to be fair comment also, and I think I try to do that.”
