Sir Alex Ferguson may face charge over ref comments

Football News Staff - 3 Mar 2011
Sir Alex Ferguson could be in hot water with the Football Association following comments he made about referee Martin Atkinson.

The Manchester United boss criticised Atkinson following Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in which the official opted against sending off Blues defender David Luiz for a challenge on Wayne Rooney, awarded the hosts what Ferguson called a “soft” penalty and then dismissed United defender Nemanja Vidic late on.

The Scot told MUTV: “You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway - and we didn't get that.

“I must say, when I saw who the referee was I feared it. I feared the worst.”

The FA have now requested a copy of the post-match interview from the club and Ferguson, who already has two games of a four-match ban still hanging over him from last season, could face a charge of improper conduct.

Ferguson will learn his fate by 16.00 GMT on Friday, but if he is handed a touchline ban it will not come into effect before the weekend showdown with fierce rivals Liverpool.
