Manchester United will dip into the transfer market to find a successor to Edwin van der Sar.
The veteran Dutchman, 40, has confirmed he will retire from the game at the end of the season in order to spend more time with his family, and his departure will leave a major void at Old Trafford.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been in this situation before having struggled to find a replacement for Peter Schmeichel, and the Scot is not expected to turn to Tomasz Kuzszcak and Anders Lindegaard, who currently back up Van der Sar.
Goalkeeper Eric Steele said: “We could do it internally, but we have looked at the best targets and we have a nice one, two and three who we think can fill the job.”
The Red Devils have been linked with a string of goalkeepers this season, including Juventus veteran Gianluigi Buffon, FC Schalke 04 stopper Manuel Neuer and Atletico Madrid starlet David de Gea.
