Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will retire at the end of the season.
Ferguson struggled to replace Peter Schmeichel when he left the club in 1999, signing a string of goalkeepers that ultimately failed to fill the former Denmark international’s boots.
However, the United boss finally found his man when he paid £2m to land Van der Sar from Premier League rivals Fulham in 2005.
The 40-year-old has been a key figure in United’s success during his time at Old Trafford, but Ferguson believes the player will finally call time on his career in the summer.
The Scot said: “We are planning for this being his last season.”
When asked about the possibility of the Dutchman remaining at Old Trafford in a coaching capacity, Ferguson added: “We have not discussed it. But Edwin is a player who would be of interest in terms of his knowledge and standing in the game.”
