Gary Neville: Jose Mourinho can replace Sir Alex Ferguson

Football News Staff - 14 Mar 2011
Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho could become Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Manchester United.

Ferguson’s United reign is expected to come to an end in the coming years, with the Scot now 69 years old, and Real Madrid boss Mourinho has repeatedly been linked with the Old Trafford post.

The Portuguese, who has enjoyed successful spells with FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, has made no secret of his desire to manage in England once again and Neville believes he is capable of taking on the unenviable task of succeeding Ferguson.

However, the former United captain claims it will be some time before the current manager walks away.

Neville told The Sun: “There are many great managers and there's always speculation about who's going to take over from Sir Alex.

“I'm sure when the time does come, Mourinho is one of the candidates who will be mentioned because of the success he's had elsewhere.

“He's a character. You have to respect people for what they do and he's very good at what he does. He's been successful wherever he's been.

“But it doesn't come into my head at this moment in time as Sir Alex is still going stronger than ever. It's a waste of time to start speculating who will take over from him.”
