Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar insists he will be retiring at the end of this season.
United supporters chanted “one more year” during Van der Sar’s impressive performance in the FA Cup win over Arsenal at the weekend, but the 40-year-old Dutchman will not be performing a U-turn.
He said: “I don't hate the thought of retirement. I am looking forward to it.
“I am at my peak and it will be nice to finish at my peak. Maybe it is a weight off my shoulders.
“It is nice to get recognition from the fans and I will miss football and the buzz.
“It has been 20 years. But I have other good things, including a lovely wife and great kids.”
And Van der Sar is keen to finally add an FA Cup winners’ medal to his collection in May, but United must first get past Manchester City in a semi-final showdown at Wembley Stadium next month.
He added: “An FA Cup winners' medal would mean a lot despite what I have already won in my career.
“It is there and on my list but I wouldn't look back in regret if don't win it.”
