Colorado Rapids v Portland Timbers live preview

Major League Soccer Cup holders Colorado Rapids begin the defence of their title against expansion team Portland Timbers tonight.

The Rapids got the better of FC Dallas in last season’s finale and boss Gary Smith has made few changes to his squad for the 2011 campaign, but he has managed to land two big signings in midfielder Jeff Larentowicz and Caleb Folan.

And it is the arrival of Folan from English Championship side Hull City that has been the major talking point in MLS in the final few weeks of pre-season.

Smith said of the Republic of Ireland international: “Physically, there is no doubt he will be a great prospect within the team.

“The thing we have to work with him on is his health.”
