Liverpool wrap up swoop for Luis Suarez

Football News Staff - 31 Jan 2011
Liverpool have completed their £22.8m swoop for Ajax striker Luis Suarez.

Uruguay international Suarez, who shot to prominence at the World Cup last summer following a goal-laden spell for both club and country, has put pen-to-paper on a five-and-a-half year deal with the Reds after successfully completing a medical.

Suarez becomes the Reds’ first new arrival during the transfer window on a dramatic final day.

This evening it was revealed the 24-year-old South American, who will wear the number seven jersey, could be joined by Newcastle United forward Andy Carroll after the Magpies accepted an offer from Liverpool worth a reported £35m.

But one man he will not play alongside is Fernando Torres who is expected to wrap up a move to Chelsea this evening, with the Premier League champions reportedly splashing out £50m for the Spaniard.

Also on his way out of Anfield, albeit on loan, is full-back Paul Konchesky after he agreed to join Championship promotion-chasers Nottingham Forest.
