Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss tonight’s Europa League last-16 clash with Braga. (kick-off 18.00 GMT)

The midfielder has been struggling with a groin injury in recent weeks, but the reason for his absence was not mentioned by the club’s official website.

Record signing Andy Carroll is poised to make his second appearance for the Reds having made his debut as a substitute during the weekend win over Manchester United, but fellow forward Luis Suarez is ineligible.

Defensively manager Kenny Dalglish has a headache contend with as Fabio Aurelio (hamstring) has joined Daniel Agger (calf) and Martin Kelly (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Danny Wilson could play the role of makeshift left-back with Glen Johnson switching back to his regular role on the right-hand side, while young left-backs Jon Flanagan and Emmanuel Mendy have been included in the travelling party.
