Penarol head into their sixth game top of the standings, two points ahead of LDU Quito and Godoy Cruz, and a draw in this one would be enough to put them in the next round.
Bottom-of-the-group Independiente, meanwhile, could still progress mathematically if they win this match, but they would need to win by eight goals and hope for a draw between LDU Quito and Godoy Cruz for that to happen.
While Penarol’s last outing in this competition ended in a 2-1 win over Godoy Cruz, Independiente held LDU Quito to a 1-1 draw.
