Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk opted to axe Manchester City man de Jong following the tackle that broke Hatem Ben Arfa’s leg at the weekend, claiming the challenge was one bad tackle too much.
He said: “Nigel has really gone too far. It is an unfortunate one because this issue only has losers.
“Ben Arfa has a double leg fracture and I have lost from two very important matches a player who is in top form.”
Van Marwijk’s decision is a brave one in the face of so many injuries, with Robin van Persie, Eljero Elia, Theo Janssen, Ron Vlaar and Arjen Robben among those absent for the Oranje.
However, he can call upon Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart who has been in scintillating for Spurs since his deadline-day move from Real Madrid.
Holland enter the game having won both of their previous qualifying games, while Moldova followed up their opening match win over Finland with defeat to Hungary.
