Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has undergone a successful operation to remove a liver tumour.
The 31-year-old France international underwent surgery at the city’s BarnaClinic Grup Hospiital Clinic on Thursday night and could leave the facility sometime next week.
A statement on Barcelona’s official website read: “During the operation, which lasted for approximately three hours, the medical team removed the tumour through laparoscopic surgery without any complications.
“Depending on his progress, the player could be allowed to leave hospital within a week.
“By the express desire of the player, the club ask for the maximum respect for his right to privacy and confidentiality.”
Meanwhile, Barca have confirmed they will stand by their plans to offer Abidal a new contract.
Club vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu told RAC 1 radio station: “We have decided not to sign anyone to replace Eric Abidal. (Andreu) Fontas will step up to join the first team.
“From Friday we will try for a contract extension for Eric with his agent.”
