Racing Santander midfielder Gonzalo Colsa believes the club are in “great shape” to retain their Primera Division status.
Racing have enjoyed a good run of form since Marcelino Garcia Toral was placed in charge by new owner Ahsan Ali Syed, claiming seven points from the last nine available to climb to 12th place in the Spanish top flight, five points clear of the dreaded drop zone.
They could have been seven points clear had they not surrendered a late equaliser against Villarreal last weekend, but Colsa is not dwelling on that result.
He said: “We could have beaten Villarreal because we had the chances and unfortunately they equalised in stoppage time.
“It was a shame but we cannot forget that against Sevilla we also won in the last minute.
“The important thing was the attitude that we saw on the pitch and how quickly the side have taken on board the ideas of Marcelino. The team is in great shape.”
While Racing Santander were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with high-flying Villarreal last time out, rock-bottom Almeria were beaten 3-1 by fellow strugglers Malaga.
