Europa League last 32 wrap-up - FC Porto scrape through

Football News Staff - 23 Feb 2011
FC Porto scraped into the last 16 of the Europa League on away goals despite losing 1-0 to Sevilla on Wednesday night.

Porto netted twice on Spanish soil to take a 2-1 advantage into the second leg, and they could have extended their advantage had Fernando Belluschi hit the target, while Javi Varas’ fine fingertip save denied Alvaro Pereira.

Falcao then met a Silvestre Varela delivery into the box but could only thunder his header against the crossbar, and he was later denied by a fine last-ditch tackle.

Their profligacy was punished when former striker Luis Fabiano put Sevilla level on aggregate with little under 20 minutes to go, and both sides were then reduced to 10 men as Peirera and Alexis saw red.

But Sevilla could not find a second goal in the closing minutes and it is Porto who will now face CSKA Moscow in the next round.
