Chelsea 2 MSK Zilina 1

Football News Staff - 23 Nov 2010
Florent Malouda’s late goal ensured Chelsea would finish top of Champions League Group F with a 2-1 win over MSK Zilina.

Already assured of a place in the last-16, manager Carlo Ancelotti named an inexperienced line-up for the clash at Stamford Bridge, and the Italian saw his out-of-form side go behind on 19 minutes.

Babatounde Bello exchanged passes with Robert Jez before cutting through a makeshift Chelsea defence to prod the ball past Ross Turnbull.

An upset looked like it could be on the cards as Tomas Majtan tested Turnbull, but the Blues then came to life and began to pile forward.

Daniel Sturridge fired wide when Didier Drogba was well placed, and the young striker had another chance pushed away by Martin Dubravka before Florent Malouda failed to test the Zilina goalkeeper with a header.

The equaliser came six minutes after the interval when Salomon Kalou’s cross was turned in at the far post by Sturridge, and the woodwork then twice saved the visitors as the Premier League champions turned the screw.

Drogba’s free-kick was pushed onto the post by Dubravka and Patrick Van Aanholt then clattered the upright, but the hosts did eventually snatch a deserved winner four minutes from time when Malouda met a Drogba knockdown and fired home.
