Former West Brom and Celtic boss Mowbray, an ex-Boro defender, is believed to have met with chairman Steve Gibson at the weekend about possibly succeeding Gordon Strachan.
Mowbray is the current 1/4 favourite with Ladbrokes, but Gibson is also thought be considering a number of other options following Strachan’s resignation last week.
Among those options are thought to be ex-Hull manager Phil Brown (4/1) and former Bolton and Leicester chief Gary Megson (7/1), while Paul Ince (4/1), who had a brief spell at Blackburn, is understood to be holding talks with the club early this week.
One man who is definitely interested is former Boro frontman Fabrizio Ravanelli, and he is 33/1 with Ladbrokes.
The Italian told The Sun at the weekend: “It is my dream to manage Middlesbrough and I’m determined to make it happen.
“I have very happy memories of the club and would love to return. Steve Gibson is a great man and I spoke to him every day when I was a player.
“England is the place to manage, because only there do the clubs invest a lot of time and energy in their managers.
“I have my licence to coach and have done all my badges.”
Middlesbrough are currently third from bottom in the Championship, just a point above rock-bottom Bristol City who they face this Saturday.
