Derby County deny done-deal for Luke Varney

Football News Staff - 25 Nov 2010
Derby County have denied Blackpool’s claim that a deal for Luke Varney is done and dusted.

Varney has been a revelation since joining the Premier League newcomers on a season-long loan, and boss Ian Holloway recently claimed the forward would be joining in a cut-price deal in January.

He told the Daily Mail: “We are going to sign him in January. We have a massive clause in there.

“He can’t go anywhere else and we get him for £250,000. They can’t change that, there’s nothing they can do about it. Unlucky.”

But the Rams, who paid over £1m for Varney in January 2009, insist they can do a deal with any club should they wish to sell the 28-year-old in future.

A club spokesman told the Derby Telegraph: “Just to clarify the situation with Luke Varney’s future, contrary to what has been reported in the national press there is no clause in the current loan deal which allows Blackpool exclusive access to sign the player permanently in January.

“Luke can be sold to any club during the next transfer window with no specification on any potential transfer.

“Hopefully, this will dispel any future confusion regarding this matter.”
