Schalke 3 Valencia 1 (agg 4-2)

Football News Staff - 9 Mar 2011

Jefferson Farfan struck twice as Schalke came from behind to book their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Valencia.

With the first leg having ended 1-1, Valencia drew first blood at the Veltins-Arena as Mehmet Topal’s cross was headed home in style by Ricardo Costa on 17 minutes.

Raul, who became UEFA’s all-time leading goalscorer in the first leg, headed wide as Schalke sought an equaliser, while at the other end Christoph Metzelder got in the way of Aritz Aduriz’s shot to prevent the Germans from going further behind.

The hosts levelled the tie five minutes before the break as Farfan found the top corner with a sublime curling free-kick, and seven minutes after the restart they went ahead when Mario Gavranovic incredibly fired in off both uprights.

Aritz squandered two fine chances late on, firing into the side-netting before being denied by a smart save from Manuel Neuer, and Juan Mata then failed to beat the Schalke goalkeeper as Valencia pressed for a second away goal that would put them through.

At the other end they enjoyed some fortune as Gavranovic twice hit the frame of the goal, but Farfan ensured it would be Schalke progressing with his second goal of the game in added time.
