Champions League wrap-up - Inter Milan advance despite heavy loss

Football News Staff - 7 Dec 2010
Holders INTER MILAN missed out the chance to progress to the Champions League knockout stage as Group A winners, going down 3-0 at WERDER BREMEN.

Sebastien Prodl headed the German side in front before Mark Arnautovic met a Hugo Almeida cross to volley in the second.

And Bremen wrapped up a comfortable victory in the closing stages as Claudio Pizarro made it 3-0.

Meanwhile, TOTTENHAM were confirmed as surprise winners of the group following a thrilling 3-3 draw at FC TWENTE.

A bizarre own goal by Peter Wisgerhof and a brace form Jermain Defoe saw Spurs go ahead three times, but each time the Dutch side responded through Denny Landzaat, Roberto Rosales and Nacer Chadli.

In Group C, MANCHESTER UNITED came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with VALENCIA, Park Ji-Sung cancelling out a Pablo Hernandez goal as the Red Devils finished top of the group.

And in the other game, BURSASPOR earned their only point of the group stage by holding RANGERS to a 1-1 draw as Sercan Yildrim struck with 11 minutes remaining after Kenny Miller had put the Scottish champions ahead.

Elsewhere, Andreu Fontas and Victor Vazquez were both on target as BARCELONA completed their Group D campaign with a 2-0 victory over RUBIN KAZAN.

And FC COPENHAGEN followed the Catalan giants into the knockout stage courtesy of a 3-1 win at home to PANATHINAIKOS, with the goals coming from Martin Vingaard, Jesper Gronkjaer and a Djibril Cisse own goal.

Finally, in Group B, Jose Manuel Jurado and Benedikt Howedes both struck as FC SCHALKE ran out 2-1 winners at BENFICA to finish top of the standings, while LYON followed them into the next round after a 2-2 draw at HAPOEL TEL AVIV.
