Mainz v Wolfsburg live preview

Football News Staff - 22 Jan 2011
Mainz will be aiming to keep up with Bundesliga’s top-two, Borussia Dortmund and Hannover 96, when they lock horns with Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Mainz are in third place and by picking up their 12th win of the season along, coupled with a defeat for Hannover, they would climb to second in the German top flight.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg are struggling down in 14th place and coach Steve McClaren admits they cannot afford a repeat of the 4-3 defeat when the two teams met earlier this season.

The former England boss said: “That defeat really hurt us. It hampered the team for the entire first half of the season.

“You could see this in our nervousness at home to Leverkusen and Schalke. It took us a long time to deal with this game and I don't like to recall it.

“Now I am looking forward to the rematch and hope that my next memory of Mainz is a good one.”

The Bundesliga returned last week following their winter break and Mainz were beaten 1-0 by Stuttgart, while Wolfsburg held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw.
