Cologne have sacked manager Zvonimir Soldo following a disappointing start to their Bundesliga campaign which sees them languishing in the relegation zone.
Soldo’s position looked to be safe when chairman Wolfgang Overath gave him a public vote of confidence last week.
But Cologne are now rock-bottom after collecting just five points from their opening nine games, with Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Hannover proving to be the final straw for the German club’s board.
A statement on the club’s official website read: “FC Cologne and Zvonimir Soldo this afternoon ended their co-operation.
“The board and management of the club have jointly taken the decision after a detailed analysis.
“Frank Schafer, formerly coach of the U23 side, will take training and lead the team in Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal game against 1860 Munich.”
