Jens Lehmann confirms Arsenal talks

Football News Staff - 15 Mar 2011
Jens Lehmann has confirmed reports of an approach from former club Arsenal as they look to ease their goalkeeping crisis.

Manager Arsene Wenger has seen Lukasz Fabianski, Wojciech Szczesny and Vito Mannone all go down with injury in recent months, meaning Manuel Almunia is the only senior goalkeeper available to the Frenchman.

Reports began to spread over the weekend that the Frenchman had turned to 41-year-old Lehmann, who retired from the game last summer, and that has now been confirmed by the former Germany international.

Lehmann, who had a successful five-year spell with the Gunners, said: “I know this Arsenal team and I am sure we can go on and win the title. If I can play a part in that, so much the better.

“It never crossed my mind that I might end up saving it (Arsenal's goalkeeping crisis). But when they asked me, I was more than happy to oblige.

“It was just over the last few days that they contacted me to see if I could help out for the rest of the season and I agreed straight away.”
