Arsenal have made a move for Southampton starlet Alex Chamberlain.
Chamberlain, 17, has produced a string of fine performances for the League One club this season to become one of the most talked about prospects in English football.
Those displays have led to the player being linked with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, but it is the Gunners who have publicly admitted their interest.
And boss Arsene Wenger is hoping Chamberlain will follow the path Theo Walcott made from the South Coast to North London.
Wenger said: “We will try now. We need an agreement with Southampton.
“We need an agreement with the player, and we are not the only ones on the case.
“But we try as hard as we can as I like him as a player.”
And Chamberlain’s father, Mark, believes a move to the Emirates Stadium would be the ideal switch for his son.
The former England international told Sky Sports News: “Arsenal, with the manager there, they way play and how they develop players I think they are the ideal choice.
“I am his dad. I've worked with both (Alex and Walcott). They both got different attributes.
“Theo has already played 100 Premier League games for Arsenal, played for England and has scored a hat-trick. He's a really good player.
“Alexander is a little different. He's a bit better technically. He's more of a central midfielder player than a wide player.
“He's coping very well. It's all speculation. It's the time of the year when things do happen. I think if anything is happening the club will keep us notified.”
