Arsenal 3 Partizan Belgrade 1

Football News Staff - 8 Dec 2010
Ten-man Arsenal booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade.

The Gunners did not enjoy the best of starts, losing full-back Kieran Gibbs to injury after he slipped while making a challenge.

But they overcame the loss and went ahead on the half-hour mark when Robin Van Persie went down under a challenge from Marko Jovanovic, and the Dutchman then composed himself to convert the penalty.

Partizan netted a shock equaliser seven minutes into the second half when Cleo’s effort struck Sebastien Squillaci and beat a helpless Lukasz Fabianski.

Knowing his side needed a win to make certain of their progress, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger sent on Theo Walcott with little over 20 minutes remaining as he looked to lift his side.

And the decision proved to be an inspired substitution by the Frenchman as the 21-year-old volleyed in Arsenal’s second six minutes later, with Samir Nasri wrapping things up with a third.

However, some of the gloss was taken off the result when Bacary Sagna saw red for a foul on Aleksandar Lazevski, and he will now miss the first leg of the Gunners’ last-16 tie.
